An All-Day Hiking Elopement to Sandwood Bay Beach

We first met C & M through a dear friend and because they were locals, we were able to do our initial consultation in person. We arranged a coffee date at a local favorite, The Pavillion on Broughty Ferry Beach, and started to get to know each other! The four of us took our coffees to go and walked along the beach with our dog Bella.

C & M told us their story and the ideas they had for their dream elopement. They settled on Sandwood Bay, Scotland’s most remote beach. It was there, just a year before, that M proposed to C during an overnight camping trip.

We all arrived in the area the night before and made sure to be well rested for what was to come. In the morning, we met C & M at the remote Blairmore car park and set off on foot for the scenic 4-mile trail hike in.

Before we had even covered a few hundred metres, we came across a croft farmer by the name of Cathill and his sheepdog Roy herding the livestock back from breakfast. After a wee chat with Cathill, he offered to drive us up the crofting track to the halfway point of the hike! We’re not usually the type to accept rides from strangers… but considering how much we were carrying that day, we were certainly glad of the ride!

When we reached the end of the road, we said our farewells to Cathill and Roy and thanked them for their hospitality. We then pressed on the rest of the way to the beach on foot.

When we reached the hills overlooking the bay, we stopped at some old ruins to begin getting ready. It was here we were caught up by Ashton the celebrant who had set off a little later than us (and sadly missed out on the ride). After some peaceful getting ready shots, we all walked down the hills and through the amazing dunes.

C & M set up their tent, and we began the ceremony out on the beach. The wind made for cold but beautiful conditions. The surf was immense and with the whole beach to ourselves it felt truly other worldly. The couple enjoyed a big dram of whisky from their quaich to warm them as they braved the wind for their post ceremony shoot.

When nightfall came, we said our goodbyes and left them to enjoy their wedding dinner in their tent. The hike out was wet, cold and dark but we enjoyed a hot dinner and cosy bed on our return to our accommodation.

On the ride home, C & M caught up to us on a quiet country road. They said that Cathill met them again on their way out and gave them a dozen eggs to take home with them. In Cathill’s words “They don’t come more organic or free range than these!” C & M gave half a dozen of the eggs to us and sped away to Costco, to stock up on food and drink for the surprise wedding reception they were having with friends and family that weekend. MJ was able to rush a few sneak peaks for them to share with their guests and we even stopped in for a couple of hours to share in the celebrations!
