Best Time of Year to Elope in Scotland
Comparing the Seasons, Sunrise and Sunset Times, Expected Weather, and the Busiest Months in Scotland
Planning Resources by Scotland Elopement Co
The weather doesn't fluctuate greatly in Scotland, but each season brings pros and cons. There is no right or wrong time to elope in Scotland - it just depends on what kind of day you envision for your elopement. I usually recommend spring or autumn, but each season is unique for its own reason. Keep reading for an overview of each season here in Scotland.
Table of contents:
Spring Elopements in Scotland (March, April, and May)
Sunrise and sunset are within reach! Depending on the date and location, sunrise is usually around 5 to 7am, and sunset is usually around 6 to 9/10pm.
There can be snow on the mountaintops, which is beautiful for photos.
The snow melt and rainy days create a pretty wet environment in spring, but that also means waterfalls tend to be flowing at their best!
It can be pretty muddy on trails, and hiking elopements aren’t as feasible (snow lingers at higher altitudes).
School holidays usually fall around the first 2 weeks of April, so some places can be busy with local visitors and tourists, especially on weekends.
Summer Elopements in Scotland (June, July, and August)
Sunrise and sunset are more difficult to incorporate into your elopement due to the extremely long days. It never really gets that dark in the peak of summer! Depending on the date and location, sunrise is usually around 4 to 6am, and sunset is usually around 9 to 11pm.
Landscapes are very green and lush, and the purple heather is in bloom. But the ground can still be pretty wet and muddy!
Hiking elopements are great in summer, as the snow is usually melted at the higher elevations, making the trails more accessible.
The weather can be sunny and warm, if you can believe it! But don’t write off chilly or rainy days. You’ll always have to pack sweaters and raincoats when traveling to Scotland, no matter when you come.
July is really popular for local visitors around the country due to school holidays, so even remote locations tend to be busy, especially on weekends.
August is really popular for international visitors (see below, the Fringe Festival), which means the entire country gets quite booked up, especially on weekends.
The Edinburgh Fringe Festival happens every August, which means the city will be absolutely packed with visitors. It’s the biggest arts festival in the world, with over 3,000 performances throughout the month. If you like art, comedy, dance, and small shows, then definitely add the Fringe to your bucket list! Just keep in mind, the best elopement locations will be crowded with international visitors and the local accommodation is pricey, and booked out very far in advance, especially on weekends.
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo also takes place during the Fringe Festival, so the entire landing in front of the Edinburgh Castle is transformed into a stadium. Military bands travel from around the world to perform, and it’s one of the most unique shows you’ll ever see.
Autumn Elopements in Scotland (September, October, and November)
Sunrise and sunset are within reach again! Depending on the date and location, sunrise is usually around 6 to 8am, and sunset is usually around 5 to 8pm.
There are far fewer tourists, as the summer rush calms down.
It’s the beginning of cozy season! The vibes are immaculate, the fires are roaring, warm food and hot drinks are in season, and everyone is in a romantic mood.
The colors in the highlands will be more orange and brown, perfect for an earthy aesthetic.
Local spots may be less crowded, and accommodation won’t be as booked up.
Keep in mind, local school holidays usually fall around the first 2 weeks of October, so some popular spots may be busier, especially on weekends.
Winter Elopements in Scotland (December, January, and February)
Sunrise and sunset are really easy to incorporate because the days are so short. Depending on the date and location, sunrise is usually around 8 to 9am, and sunset is usually around 3 to 5pm.
Thanks to the short days, the sun is always low in the sky, granting us gorgeous soft light, and what seems like golden hour all day.
It’s cold, but there’s also a chance of snow.
Winter is the best time to see the Aurora Borealis in the northern parts of Scotland.
The Edinburgh Christmas Markets are in town! This world-class winter festival is such a romantic setting for an elopement. There are lots of wonderful stalls to enjoy with food, arts, and gifts - plus fun activities and rides. Weekends in Edinburgh can be busy during December, but it’s all part of the magical holiday atmosphere.
The smell of malt is quite noticeable in Edinburgh too, which can be really lovely or really off-putting depending on your preference (we love it!).
Some hotels and restaurants close during the winter season, especially along the north coast and the islands. Boat and ferry crossings are less frequent and can be prone to weather cancellations as well.
